    What is Istation's RAN assessment?

Istation’s Indicators of Progress (ISIP) Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) screening assessment offers educators an online screening tool that measures students' processing speed, which may be an indicator of reading difficulties such as dyslexia.

Students can take the assessment independently in English or Spanish in just 5 to 7 minutes - no teacher supervision required. Student recordings are stored in an online archive, allowing teachers to score the assessment at their convenience.

    When To Use RAN

Reading difficulties are often identified in a child's first 2 years of elementary school. Early warning signs such as weak phonemic awareness and fluency skills are indicators that a RAN assessment is needed.

Administering a RAN test at the beginning of the school year can help teachers identify when a student needs support with foundational reading skills.

    How RAN Scoring Works

During a RAN assessment, students record themselves naming familiar symbols (pictures, letters, and numbers) as quickly as they can without making mistakes. Educators then access the student recordings and the scorecard to score the assessment.

After scoring the RAN assessment, teachers receive a report showing raw scaled scores, and percentiles for each student.
